Common Winter Skin Care Myths

There are many different ideas about what is best for your skin and many are unreliable. In winter skin is often dry and flaky due to the cold weather and you may go searching for ways to keep your skin looking and feeling good in these extra tough months on your skin. In fact, some ideas are actually the opposite of helpful and can even damage your skin even more! Here you can find some of the popular beauty theories which offer more harm than good results.

Hot showers are better for your skin in winter.

False! In winter with the cold days and even darker nights, there is nothing better than indulging in a hot shower that feels amazing on your skin. However, a hot shower isn’t actually good for you as the heat can damage the skin and can disturb the natural oils on your skin which are essential to maintain healthy and happy skin. This causes the skin to become dry, flaky and even itchy as it lacks the moisture that is produced from the essential oils in your skin. Unfortunately, it’s not really feasible to have a colder shower in winter and so the only solution is to shorten your time under the hot water and perhaps turn the heat down just a little bit. There is also a range of excellent skincare products that are specially designed for dry skin in the winter months which will help you to improve and maintain the condition of your skin all year round.

Skin exfoliation is unnecessary in winter.

False again! It is essential that you exfoliate your skin all year round to maintain gorgeous, smooth skin and even more so important in the winter months when skin is drier and flakier due to the colder weather. Regular exfoliation not only improves the condition of your skin, it also removes dead skin cells and dirt from the surface, reduces spot breakouts and keeps the skin moisturised with all the essential nutrients that many exfoliation products provide. Exfoliating your skin is necessary every month of the year and keeps your skin healthy and glowing and if you include a regular moisturiser in your skincare routine, your skin will look the best it ever has!

Winter Skin

Moisturising isn’t needed for oily skin in winter.

Wrong! No matter what time of year or even your skin condition, regular moisturising daily is essential to maintaining youthful and flawless skin all year round. In winter it is much colder and the weather is harsher on the skin and so moisturising is actually even more important then as the skin is often drier and flaky. If you have oily skin, you can look for a suitable moisturising product which is oil-free or gel-based to make sure you still receive the same essential nutrients without the additional oils to improve your oily skin. A regular moisturising routine protects your skin from the natural toxins and pollution in the air and keeps your skin looking amazing even in winter.

Thicker moisturising creams are better.

In some cases, this can be true, but just because it is winter it doesn’t mean you need to change your usual moisturising product for something that may not make any difference to your skin. A thicker moisturiser doesn’t always mean that it is better and you should only use a moisturiser that is most effective against your skin type and condition. There are many incredible winter moisturisers available and the best one for you is the one that caters specifically to your skin condition, whether that is oily, dry or un-hydrated.

There are many myths relating to skincare routines, especially for the winter months but with this trusty guide, your skin is sure to feel and look better than ever all year round! Always choose a skincare product that is most suitable for your skin condition, always moisturise and exfoliate daily and don’t stay in the hot shower for too long!
